In films, mise-en-scene is a huge part of making the film look good and enhances it to suit the genre. In terms of proxemics, where characters are placed in a frame make a huge difference giving an idea of what that relationship is like between those people.
Couples hugging or are close in frame gives the audience the idea that they have a good relationship and they are fine together.
When couples are far away from each other in the frame, behind one another or facing back to back, this could be an indication to the audience that their relationship isn't good and they need a way to improve the relationship.
Proxemics are so important in a film, you can't get them wrong as the audience will read into them and you need to make them realistic and understandable.
